We would like you to understand that sustainable living can happen over night, it only takes a couple of commitments from you and the will to follow through. We can not take people out of infested trash zones(3 rd world as it is called) and expect them to fully appreciate our new system. We must educate them to live in harmony with their environment and some would say, More importantly, With themselves. The fact is, you can not do one with out the other. This Education starts with the word we carry to each other and allow that to unfold to the whole.  By what ever means proves fruitful.

We are asking for resources to support and the many projects we have awaiting Vessels/Volunteers/ Comforters/  and Caretakers. Good people in the Industry please step up and Direct us to Solutions that are easy to apply. Solar, Wind, Vehicle Conversions, investors, fundraisers, media resources, interviews etc, etc.  Collaboration is a commitment that focuses with Diligence upon a sustainable solution.

Now allow me a moment to lay out the Mission and that which will lead you down the power path to sustainable living and co-creation.

So what we would like you to do…. is  REAL and SIMPLE.  We ask you to commit to a sustainable act 1ST and not only do we ask that you commit to this, we also ask that while your committing you allow you mind to expand. To consider what your doing and why (see our blogs). To consider your impact right then.. as you do it. This is the master key that leads to empowerment!!  Now that you have done this begin to pay it forward and remember what led you to your choice and honor it.  We understand that energy exchanges only come full circle when appreciate is shared throughout.   We appreciate you now. One day of Selfless service may look like this…. Once upon a time I committed 4 hours (on my Saturday~ a day off.. ) to Service. I helped clean up someones sorrow. (The Garbage outside the door) You know how to tell if someone is in sorrow?

Its the trash they surround themselves in. Trash they mix with treasure.. So eventually it rots and becomes so bad it erases memories of what is pasted. It is the trauma we pull on and over ourselves… only we have the power to stop and support another to do the same. Only we have the power to change our habits.  It only takes One. That one is you.

I commit at least one hour every day… of course I had to work toward that.. Once, I committed myself to months of service for pennies, food in my stomach and it was the best time of my life. Truly.  Now I do it as often as possible.  I spent time with an inventor, woodworker, painter, Business Woman, Spiritually Sick, Spiritually Sound, Seekers, Knowings seek more knowledge, those stuck in cycles of abuse/addiction and so many more. To be an example and nothing more.

Some of us just need TO HEAL, before we can help another.  To do that you must be able to say. OK. I see that and this happened and now I have this mess to clean up.. WOW.. I am OK with that. I love myself enough to believe I DESERVE a second chance, letting go of what others think and say, it does not serve. me anyway.  Then call upon someone to assist you in applying some master keys in your life today.  It only takes your will to change the cause of your next effect.

Whether you live in a log cabin, Geodesic Dome or some other Eco Home, you can make a place for wildlife right out your backdoor. It’s easier than you think. There are three basic steps to creating a  Wildlife Habitat.  This Restores the Ecology and Creates Sustainability.

Assess Your Yard or Garden Space

The first thing you need to do is identify the habitat elements that already exist in your yard or garden space. You may be surprised to find you’re already providing some habitat for wildlife!

Native plants that provide food and cover are the backbone of every habitat. Make a list of all the plants in your yard, including everything from trees to wildflowers.

Try to determine which of your plants are native to your area and which are not. Which existing plants might provide food such as seeds, fruits, nuts, and nectar? Which plants might provide safe cover or nesting places?

Do you have any dead or dying trees? If so, don’t reach for the chainsaw! Dying or dead trees are excellent habitat features. They are excavated and used by woodpeckers, flying squirrels, and a multitude of insects and cavity-nesting birds, such as owls, bluebirds, chickadees, and wrens.

Determine how your yard might already provide water for wildlife. This could be in the form of a pond, water garden, stream, vernal pool, or birdbath.

Make a list of any structures that provide habitat elements, such as bird feeders, nesting structures, rock walls, or log piles.

Finally, consider the physical features of your yard, such as sun and wind exposure and soil conditions.

Provide the Four Basic Elements

All species have four basic requirements for survival. These are food, water, cover, and places to raise young.

1.      Food

Select plants that provide natural foods such as fruits, seeds, nuts, and nectar. Choose your plants to provide food for backyard wildlife throughout the year.

Native perennials and annuals provide nectar for both butterflies and hummingbirds. As one program participant says, “Hummingbirds like ice-cream cones and butterflies like pizza.” This is because hummingbirds tend to visit tube-shaped red flowers, such as Bee Balm, Wild Columbine, and our native honeysuckles. Butterflies prefer flat or clustered flowers, such as Purple Coneflower, phlox, and zinnias.

By choosing native plants suited to the site conditions, little maintenance, chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or additional watering will be necessary for the plants to thrive. This all adds up to time and cost savings as well as a healthier habitat for you, your family, and the wildlife that inhabit your yard.

Supplemental feeders can provide nectar for hummingbirds in the summer months and a variety of seed (sunflower, niger, safflower, and millet) for other birds throughout the year. Keep in mind that bird feeders should only be used as a supplement to natural food provided by native plants.

2.      Water

Wildlife need water for drinking, bathing, and, in some cases, breeding.

Water can be supplied in a birdbath, a small pond, a recirculating waterfall, or a shallow dish. If you’re lucky enough to have a natural pond, stream, vernal pool, or other wetland on your property, make sure to preserve or restore it as these are excellent aquatic habitats.

A small pond set into the ground provides water for drinking and bathing, as well as cover and reproductive areas for small fish, insects, amphibians, and reptiles.

However you decide to provide water, make sure you do so year round. This can easily be done with a thermostatically controlled birdbath heater to provide water during subfreezing weather when the need for water is critical.

3.      Cover

When choosing your plants, make sure to include at least one good clump of evergreen trees and shrubs to provide year-round protective cover from weather and predators. Good choices are juniper, hollies, and live oaks, as they provide food as well as cover.

You should also plant deciduous shrubs to offer effective summer cover for nesting and escape from predators.

Rock, log, and mulch piles also offer good cover. Small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and a great variety of insects and other small animals find homes in these structures, which are easily constructed.

Tips for Creating Brush Piles

* Some communities do not allow brush shelters, and some neighbors might not undertand their value.
* Check you local codes and notify your neighbors if the brush pile will be highly visible.
* Place your shelter on the edge between two habitats – these “ecotones” house the most wildlife.
* Make sure at least half of your shelter receives direct sunlight – many animals love to bask.
* Use stone piles in your shelter as part of the base to create hiding places and along the edges to serve as basking sites.
* Plant native flowering/fruiting vines to sprawl over the shelter to attract hummingbirds and songbirds.
* Weave evergreen branches into the roof of your shelter in the Winter to provide cover from snow/ice storms.
* Add old pipes to your shelter’s base to serve as tunnels for rodents, reptiles and amphibians. (This is one way to recycle material) So we would ask those assisting us to gather this type of material)

4.      Places to Raise Young

Evergreen and deciduous trees and shrubs provide nesting areas for birds. Dead and dying trees (called “snags”) provide nesting sites for owls, flying squirrels, and other cavity-nesters.

Rabbits, shrews, mice, snakes, and salamanders lay their eggs or raise young under boughs of plants as well as in the rock, log, or mulch piles.

Nest boxes for bluebirds, chickadees, wrens, and purple martins can be placed in your backyard.

Aquatic animals, such as frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies, and other insects, deposit their eggs in ponds, vernal pools, and other wetlands.

Butterflies require “host” plants that serve as food sources for butterflies during their larval (caterpillar) stage. Butterflies almost invariably lay their eggs on the host plant preferred by the caterpillar, so make sure to include some of the host plants in your habitat.

Practice Resource Conservation

Conserving resources will not only help the wildlife in your own yard but will help improve your Intentional community’s environment.
Here are some ideas for practicing resource conservation in your backyard:

* Plant native plants suited to your region and do not plant any invasive exotics (non-native plants).
* Establish a backyard wetland or drainage buffer area to filter storm water and limit runoff.  If you have serious Run off create a pond (see below) that can be filled and replenished.
* Capture roof rainwater for use in planted areas. (See our Rainwater Systems)
* Use mulch to conserve soil moisture and cut down on weeding time.(See Health Page for Composting and Canning)
* Use a drip soaker hose instead of a sprinkler if watering is needed to help your plants become established. (Ask about our Bio Dome type enviroments and Green houses)
* Eliminate chemical use in your yard.  (There is absolutely NO Reason for this.)
* Control pests by organic means. Better yet, let nature take its course and encourage beneficial insects (e.g., ladybug, praying mantis), birds, bats, and other insect eaters.
* Reduce or eliminate your lawn area to cut down on mowing, watering, and general maintenance.

Build a Backyard Pond

A backyard pond can be just about as simple or complex as you want it to be. In fact, you can start out with a simple design, which I recommend, and then gradually make it as complex as you want. If you’re just getting started, don’t let the diagrams you’ve seen … kidney-shaped ponds lined with fancy rock, a fountain in the center, bi-level, etc., get the best of you. Just go out and dig a hole in the ground, pad it with sand (old carpet works very well too) to even out the rough spots and protect the liner, and then install the liner. When you’ve filled the liner with water, add a few plants from a local nursery and you’re done. Oh yes, one more important thing, you’ll have to spend lots of time watching all the critters.

If you want something a little more complex, that’s quite easy too. Make the difficult job of digging the hole easier by spreading it out over a few weeks. If your soil is clayey like mine, spraying the excavation edges with water after each digging session will loosen it up for next time. If you’re using a preformed liner, place it on the ground first to mark the shape you’ll dig. With a PVC or rubber fabric liner, be sure not to dig the hole so large that there isn’t enough liner to cover the hole and some distance back from the edge. It’s a good idea to have flat areas – both on the bottom and on shelves that flank the sides. A good flat bottom area will offer you secure footing as you finish shaping and digging your pond. Dig your pond at least one foot and preferably 2-3 feet deep. Use the dirt you removed to contour and cover the edges of the liner. If your pond site yields lots of roots and rocks, digging will be harder and you’ll need to make an extra effort in protecting that liner. Old carpet is ideal for covering jagged edges and poking root stubs. After you’re sure your liner covers that hole well, the fun part begins. Turn on the hose, grab a soda and watch it fill.

If you’re like me, you want to attract frogs. The best way, the experts say, is to leave fish out of your pond. They’ll eat most of the frog eggs and tadpoles. But, I like fish! Besides, you can have fish and some frogs, too, by creating lots of hiding and feeding cover for the frogs. I put some leaves and branches in my ponds. These provide cover as well as added nutrients and structure for small tadpole and frog foods to prosper. Piles of rocks, emerging as islands, and healthy emergent vegetation are also important as they provide emerging and perching places for frogs and for other pond life like dragonflies. Don’t make the sides too steep as it will be very difficult for the frogs and other animals that may venture into the pond to escape. With many nooks and crannies, like in a natural pond, the frogs will have a chance.

You can jumpstart your pond with frogs, if you’ll pardon the pun. Contact a local nature center or resource agency and find out about tadpole relocation efforts that may already be underway. Ask if you can obtain some tadpoles for your pond. If you don’t want to go to all that trouble, worry not as chances are the frogs will find their own way to your pond.

As you can see, making a frog pond is simple. Yes, it takes some effort and time, but I found just creating it to be almost as much fun as enjoying it afterwards.
